Letters to a Hospital: “The Battle of Alberta”

Every day I get letters from avid hospital fans asking all sorts of questions. But one has really stuck with me because it is a great question, and I don’t have a great answer for it.

Here it is:

“Dear Alex, why does Calgary get all of the hospital funding love? Aren’t the needs of Edmontonians important too?”

So here’s the deal, I don’t blame the current government for my woes, because let’s remember, I have been waiting for over 20 years for funding. And although there have been three major new hospital developments approved in Calgary during the time I have been on the top of list, I don’t have a beef with Calgary either. I love Calgary, especially the Stampede!

But it is kinda of peculiar that I haven’t received any funding given these three factors:

  1. I am the biggest and busiest hospital in the Province, serving more than just the people of Edmonton.
  2. Edmonton has an older population than Calgary. Older population means more care is needed.
  3. I’ve been at the top of Alberta’s health infrastructure list for those 20 years. I’m number 1!

So as I wrote above … I don’t really have an answer to your question, but let’s hope I don’t have to wait much longer for an answer.

Take care,

Alex
